Why Music Matters
Music has been part of human life for as long as history can tell us. Across cultures and throughout generations, families have used songs, rhythm, and movement to soothe babies, celebrate milestones, and teach traditions. Today, research helps explain why those experiences continue to play such an important role in early childhood development.
Learning music develops much like learning any other language. Children listen first, then recognize patterns, begin to anticipate what comes next, and eventually participate with increasing confidence. Long before they can sing a tune or keep a steady beat, they’re building listening skills that support musical understanding while also contributing to later language and literacy development.
Development doesn’t happen one skill at a time. When children sing, move, listen, or play an instrument, multiple developmental systems are engaged simultaneously. This is one reason why music has consistently been a valuable tool in early childhood education.
Executive function is a set of mental skills that support learning, relationships, and everyday life. These skills help children succeed in school, navigate social situations, solve problems, manage emotions, and adapt to new challenges. Like any skill, executive function develops through repeated opportunities to practice.
Development isn’t only about what children are learning, but also who they are learning with. Decades of research have shown that responsive relationships provide the foundation for healthy development, and shared musical experiences offer a natural way to strengthen those bonds.
